The largest challenge in this sequence was coming up with a fresh take on the standard holograph effect. The story takes place not too far in the future so we settled on a look that retained a frame but had a more digital feel.

The green screen element was shot on film which added a new level of complexity to the key. The trick was trying to keep the film grain while retaining good edges. The alpha was then written out and read back in to save time while previewing.

Cleanup was a challenge to try and paint out tracking markers that were placed below the glass so reflections would need to be added back on top and the value shifted significantly. Multiple grade nodes with set keyframes were used to accomplish this.

The poster look was constructed through multiple levels of effects. First, the hologram sliding effect was created in After Effects based on a tutorial. Next, I created a Chromatic Aberration effect using the expression node with transform offsets. Finally, a gizmo was used to add the final layer of scan lines needed to complete the feel.
